SHOOTING: M-1 GARAND PROJECT

This is a site dedicated to my M-1 Garand, and I will post updates as I build this thing. I am constructing this the way I want, it is not a WWII restoration or even a match gun. It's just MY gun.

My M-1 Garand arrives! It was a 'rack grade' minus wood, so here is what I started with:

It's all mine!     M1 Action

August ?, 2006

Jim and I look over my M-1. The barrel looked pretty shot up, as we could tell it was mostly operated by right handed shooters by the wear from the cleaning rod on the right side of the muzzle. We recrowned the barrel, but barrel shows a lot of wear. This gives me an excuse to order a .308 Win barrel and use it instead of the .30-06. Our best bet is that this rifle was built in 1944, saw some action in WWII and was returned to the US. International Harvester put a new trigger assembly on and shipped it to Greece. The rear site was repaired and the op rod looked good too. He gave me some parts too- clips, and an open bolt indicator. He said he'd try to dig up a buttplate, sling swivels and handguard hardware.

I ordered an unfinished walnut stock/handguard from Boyd today. They said they are slightly backordered, but would get it to me as soon as possible. The Boyd stocks are a bit thicker than standard, but I like them better. An M1 purist would be upset, but that's tough. It's unfinished too, so I'll finish it how I like. $81.12 shipped.

I ordered a Wilson .308 Win barrel from Midway today. I could have went with a more expensive barrel, but I will have shot it out before I can appreciate its effect on my scores. $219.99 shipped.

My barrel has arrived, but my stock has not. I will have to find a shop that will mount the M1 barrel, as I have been advised not to do this part myself.

Still no word on my stock. They haven't even billed me for it. I'm hopefully going to get around to calling them today, it's been well over a month.

Finally, my stock arrived about two weeks ago. Here are a few photos of the unfinished stock and handguard.

Yeah, remember that M1 Project... I shipped my stock and rifle off to Bill Rodolph and I put the barrel on, headspaced it, and bedded the stock. The photo below are what I have now. Thanks Bill!

A few weeks ago, I finished the M1 Project! I need to get a fat rear handguard, as I am using the standard smaller one. It looks a little funny considering I have a fat Boyd stock. It shoots just fine.
