Aquarium Fish: Tips

- Placing a tank away from direct sunlight will slow algae growth.
- Know your fish. Look for them to act differently and take that as a warning sign.
- Use a variety of foods rather than the same old, same old.
- Live plants are cool, but can die. Fake plants don't die, but sometimes need cleaning and replacing.
- Tiger Barbs and long finned fish don't mix well.
- Beware of snails. You may start with two.... they make chemicals called "SNAIL AWAY" for when they take over.
- Basic overcrowding prevention rule: no more inches of fish than square inches of water/air surface.
- Guppies are like snails. Except they eat their young.
- Heater malfunctions suck.
- Undergravel filters are nice, but good ol' Whisper filters are still #1. Consider running both in your tank.
- NEVER get a heater that is too big for your tank.
- Check the pH weekly. Never change the pH more than about 0.2 daily.
- NEVER pour tap water into the tank. If possible, try to let the water get to at least room temperature first and check the pH before adding it to a tank.
- When introducing new fish to the tank, float the bag in the water to let them adjust to the temperature and give them a view of their new neighbors.
